Kabosu, the shiba inu dog famous for becoming a meme around the world and inspiring the logo of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, died this Friday (23) in Japan. The death was announced by the owner, Atsuko Sato, on her blog.

“She died peacefully while being caressed,” said the woman, who also thanked fans for all their affection for Kabosu.

Kabosu became an internet phenomenon in 2010 when she posted a photo of the dog on a couch with a surprised expression and crossed paws on her blog. The image gave rise to the “Doge” meme, possibly a derivative of the word “dog”.

In addition, the dog also inspired the logo of the famous cryptocurrency Dogecoin, created in 2013.

Because Kabosu was adopted from a shelter, it’s unclear how old she was. Atsuko Sato gave a recent interview to AFP and said she believed her four-legged companion was about 18 years old.
