Britney Spears settles conservatorship case with father, but loses lawsuit

Britney Spears will have to pay her father’s legal costs in a lawsuit over her conservatorshipReproduction

Britney Spears, 42, lost the legal dispute she had with her father, Jamie Spears, who held her conservatorship for 13 years, ending in September 2021. The result was released by TMZ on Friday (26).

At the end of 2023, the singer’s father went to court to ask her to bear the legal costs of the lawsuit that freed her from his conservatorship. The pop singer was ordered to pay US$ 2 million, about R$ 10 million at the current exchange rate.

Despite the court defeat, the singer’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, celebrated the pop singer’s freedom with the end of the lawsuit. “It is an honor and a privilege to represent, protect and defend Britney Spears. Ms. Spears is and always will be an icon and a brilliant, courageous entertainer of historic and epic proportions,” the attorney told Page Six.

“Although the conservatorship ended in November 2021, his desire for freedom is now truly complete,” he continued. “As she wished, her freedom now includes the fact that she no longer has to appear or get involved in court or get involved in legal proceedings in this matter.”

According to Page Six, Mathew Rosengart acted pro bono for the singer in this lawsuit, but had already received about $4 million from Britney when the singer hired him in 2021.

A source close to the artist told Page Six that Rosengart would be willing to go to trial, but respected the wishes of the singer, who prefers to close the case.

The lawyer, for his part, said he was grateful for the opportunity to help Britney regain her autonomy. “We repeat our gratification that we are in a position to help restore Britney Spears’ civil rights and liberties and the honor and privilege it has been to serve and protect her,” he said.

Britney Spears has not yet commented on the court ruling.
