Paellas Pepe celebrates its 25th anniversary with a charity event on March 9. The restaurant, a benchmark of Spanish gastronomy in São Paulo, aims to raise food for distribution to people in vulnerable situations, through the UNAS Heliópolis institution, which assists residents of the region.

The restaurant’s history goes back to 1953, when José Gutiérrez, known as Pepe, arrived in Brazil from Madrid. Following the family tradition, Pepe prepared paella on Sundays, a recipe he had learned from his father. Over the years, the tradition continued and the backyard of the Benedetti family home was adapted to accommodate more people. In 1999, Paellas Pepe was born, today one of the city’s leading Spanish gastronomic establishments.

“It’s essential to celebrate another successful year for our restaurant, when we can give back to the community for the support and welcome we receive every day. People love to take part, because as well as tasting the paella, they contribute to helping others, and that’s invaluable,” says Fábio Benedetti, chef and partner at Paellas Pepe.

The charity event, already a tradition, moves the region with its giant version of paella, the restaurant’s flagship dish. During the celebration, chef Fábio Benedetti and his partners, the members of the family responsible for the restaurant, prepare the famous two-ton paella in a pot 3 meters in diameter.

To take part in the event and get a portion of paella, made with chicken meat, rice, vegetables, imported saffron and generous amounts of seafood, just come to the restaurant and donate 1 kg of non-perishable food.
